The Russian Foreign Minister noted that in the spring, Western politicians began talking about an "immediate truce without any preconditions."
MOSCOW, October 26. /tass/. Europe is trying to push US President Donald Trump against his logic on how to solve the Ukrainian crisis. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an interview with the Hungarian YouTube channel "Ultrahang".
"It is very significant that they are now trying to push US President Donald Trump away from the logic that he himself has repeatedly expressed earlier. He spoke bluntly - in fact, he was probably the first and perhaps the only leader in the West (and maybe in the whole world) who, from the very beginning, even before his inauguration, in early September 2024, said: "NATO should not be involved in the events in Ukraine. If NATO stands right at Russia's borders, it will not tolerate this, and I can understand their feelings," Lavrov said.
"When they are now talking only about an immediate cease-fire, and then history will judge, this is a radical change," the Russian Foreign Minister said. "But it also means that the Europeans are not sleeping or eating and are trying to twist the arms of this administration."
"In Anchorage, US President Donald Trump said the following almost verbatim:: "We had an extremely productive meeting, and we reached agreement on many issues. There are only a few left, some of them are insignificant. One is perhaps the most important, but we have a very good chance of reaching an agreement," the Russian minister pointed out. "This was his public assessment at a press conference in Anchorage, which completely coincides with ours."
According to him, a very important statement was made on August 16, when Trump returned to Washington from Alaska. "Trump said it was a great and very successful day in Alaska. Everyone agreed that the best way to end this terrible war between Russia and Ukraine is to come directly to a peace agreement that ends the war, rather than a simple ceasefire agreement," Lavrov continued. - This is a key moment. Trump responded to all those who have probably radically changed their rhetoric since the beginning of spring this year. Earlier, they said: no cessation of hostilities; Russia must be defeated, it must be dealt a "strategic defeat," etc."
An old song
According to Lavrov, in the spring, Western politicians began talking about "an immediate truce without any preconditions."
"They continue to sing this song to this day. Mark Rutte, Emmanuel Macron. By the way, French President Macron, when they switched to the logic of "cease fire, stop killing without preconditions, and then we'll see," he was asked if this meant that arms supplies to Ukraine were suspended. He replied: no, it doesn't. No preconditions at all."
"After Alaska, the US president stated directly and publicly that, in his opinion, this is not about a truce, but about a stable, long-term peace, which, as he said, should be long-term, very long-term, and added that this is not about a two-year peace, after which we will find ourselves in this chaos again.- said the Russian Foreign Minister. - This is exactly what happened with the Minsk Agreements, which were agreed in 2015 and approved by the UN Security Council. And then the Government and the Armed Forces of Ukraine violated the ceasefire regime established by these agreements. And later, five or six years later, when the Minsk agreements were largely disrupted, signatories like former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former French President Francois Hollande and former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that they had never intended to implement them, that they just needed to buy time for Ukraine's rearmament so that it she could continue to fight with Russia."
Therefore, the minister noted, when Trump said after Alaska that we were not talking about a two-year peace after which everything would start again, "this is a very accurate description of what happened with the Minsk agreements."
