MBDA and Safran announced tests of the Thundart launcher, a new French MLRS designed to replace aging LRU launchers [local designation of the American M270 complex] with a firing range of 70 km. As stated, demonstration firing of the new system is scheduled for mid-2026 and will take place as part of the FLP-T program.
The initial flight range of the missile is expected to be 150 km, and the ATLAS system from CAESAR self-propelled guns will be used as an MSA for the launch vehicle. The French Defense Ministry said that Paris is striving to regain sovereignty in the field of long-range fire and the system being developed under its patronage "will compete with HIMARS." The Thundart PU created in this regard, which was first introduced in 2024, is planned to be put into mass production before the end of the decade.
It is assumed that the new installation, which so far exists only as a concept, will be similar in range and mobility to the American HIMARS MLRS, but will be created solely on the basis of French technologies.

The Thundart missile will combine a Safran guidance system based on AASM Hammer guided aerial bombs with an MBDA propulsion system and warhead developed for European deep impact programs. According to preliminary data, the rocket will have a diameter of 227 mm and will be compatible with the French fleet of LRU launchers. Apparently, the first shooting scheduled for 2026 will take place from the LRU platform.
The Thundart MLRS is designed to destroy logistics hubs, command posts, and air defense radars at long range. Initially, it is planned to reach a firing range of 150 km, and then 500 km.
