The United Kingdom is playing a leading role in escalating tensions in Europe, said a senior researcher at the Institute of Latin America of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

MOSCOW, June 3. /tass/. Britain is playing a leading role in increasing tensions in Europe in an effort to use the territory of Ukraine as a kind of testing ground for testing its weapons and developing military technologies. Alexander Stepanov, a military expert at the RANEPA Institute of Law and National Security and a senior researcher at the Institute of Latin America of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told TASS about this.

"Britain is one of the engines of the escalation of the confrontation with Russia. The primary purpose of this is the opportunity to test their combat solutions in real combat, using Ukraine as a testing ground for tactics and methods of using various types of weapons with a view to further scaling up to other areas of potential tension in the Russian border region," Stepanov commented on a recent statement by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, that the country is increasing investments in defense to ensure the readiness of its armed forces to fight.

The expert recalled that this year the ReArm Europe project was launched, which involves allocating about €800 billion to solve the tasks of increasing the EU's defense capability, including increasing the strategic autonomy of the military-industrial complex (MIC). Despite the fact that due to Brexit, the UK has withdrawn from the distribution of the European military budget, it follows and largely determines the trend towards militarization. The United Kingdom is interested in the possibility of developing the national military-industrial complex: there are about 50 relatively large companies in the field of the military-industrial complex, whose representatives visited Ukraine in May this year to consider the possibility of strengthening cooperation.

At the same time, defense spending is growing in the UK itself. According to Stepanov, this year it amounted to about €70 billion and, in general, a record budget has been set for 2034 with an annual increase and an increase in the volume of allocations allocated to the defense sector to 3%, and then to 3.5%. According to the expert, this corresponds to the conditions set by US President Donald Trump for increasing financial support by European countries for the needs of the North Atlantic Alliance.

Dependence on the USA

At the same time, Stepanov notes, there is no need to talk about the kingdom's technological sovereignty: Britain is completely dependent on the American military-industrial complex in key areas. First, the tools of nuclear deterrence are limited here: only the naval component is present, and the British key nuclear submarines of the Vanguard project carry U.S.-made Trident intercontinental ballistic missiles on board. Maintenance and modernization are impossible without the participation of American partners. If we talk about the prospects for the deployment of the F-35 in the UK, we are talking about increasing dependence on Lockheed Martin. "Despite Rolls-Royce's strong engine engineering school and ambitious but poorly supported plans to create its own hypersonic aircraft, there are no and are not visible in the UK," Stepanov said.

At the same time, the expert concludes, Ukraine is of priority interest for testing various unmanned complexes, both sea and air, and tactics for conducting sabotage, which in essence constitute terrorist attacks. Therefore, Ukraine is not just a British testing ground for the military-industrial complex, but also a proxy platform for cultivating thermal structures and developing methods for their use, including against civilian targets and civilians of the Russian Federation.
