Samsung has developed the Galaxy Tab Active5 Tactical Edition tablet for the US Army. It has a high-strength housing, and a tracking protection mechanism is hidden inside. It is also additionally protected from hacking.
The Korean company Samsung has created a tablet computer Galaxy Tab Active5 Tactical Edition, designed for the military. Its key differences from regular tablets are increased security, both software and hardware.
The new product was developed jointly with the US Department of Defense, and employees of the US army and American special services will receive it first of all.
Samsung stressed that the new tablet provides military-grade 1 security and is compatible with applications used by special-purpose groups. Galaxy Tab Active5 Tactical Edition, can connect to most tactical radio stations, drone systems, laser rangefinders, external GPS and other specialized and military equipment. Among other things, it has access to cellular networks, including both modern 5G and obsolete LTE along with very ancient 3G.
The Wi-Fi 7 module is not provided in it, but there is Wi-Fi 6E, which provides the ability to connect to wireless networks at a frequency of 6 GHz.
One of the features of the new Samsung tablet is the 5G frequency band lock mode. With it, the Galaxy Tab Active5 Tactical Edition can connect exclusively to certified 5G networks, preventing any other network connections that may pose a security risk.
Military personnel can also use Stealth Mode for off-grid communication, disabling all radio frequency broadcasting. For even greater mission security, Covert Lock mode operates on an even larger scale than Stealth Mode – it basically disables all communication modules, including navigation, completely protecting the device from radio frequency signature radiation.
In addition, the new Galaxy Tab Active5 Tactical Edition is equipped with situational awareness tools, Samsung representatives noted. Among them, it supports working in pairs with optical night vision devices. The device is also optimized for the tactical Android applications Team Awareness Kit 3 (ATAK) and Battlefield Assisted Trauma Distributed Observation Kit 4 (BATDOK).
The Galaxy Tab Active5 Tactical Edition features Samsung Knox security 5, a defense–grade security platform. Samsung claims that the tablet complies with strict industry standards, including the NSA's list of Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) components, which allows active-duty military personnel and civilian military personnel to safely access classified information. In addition, Knox Dual Data at Rest (DualDAR) protects classified data up to the "top secret" level, which is stored on devices using two levels of encryption, even when they are turned off or in an unidentified state.
Additionally, the tablet uses Hypervisor Device Manager (HDM) technology to prevent hacking.
The tablet case is designed this way. To withstand multiple falls from a height of up to one and a half meters. The computer also has an IP68 protection class against water and dust, which is almost the maximum. Separately, it has a certificate of compliance with the military standard MIL-STD-810H 7 for operation at extreme altitudes, extreme temperatures, vibration and humidity. The device is also equipped with a replaceable battery and a touchscreen that can correctly detect the touch of wet fingers, as well as fingers in gloves. Stylus input is also supported – the S-Pen 9 pen is included in the package.
With advanced security features, the new Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5 Tactical Edition cannot boast of truly powerful hardware. In this regard, this is a very average device with a Samsung Exynos 1380 processor from more than two years ago.
The CPU was released in February 2023 and is manufactured using an advanced 5-nanometer process technology. It has four 2.4GHz Cortex-A78 cores and the same number of 2 GHz Cortex-A55 cores, as well as integrated Mali-G68 MP5 graphics. The result in the AnTuTu 10 benchmark is about 600 thousand points, in GeekBench 6 – almost 2,800 points in multi-core mode.
The tablet is equipped with an 8-inch screen, the resolution of which Samsung does not disclose, as well as the battery capacity. The price of the tablet is also unknown, but it includes two cameras – a 13-megapixel main camera and a 5-megapixel front camera.
